Original idea

Crumbling, old, active, unique

2 plain colours

Decorated blue paper - cut and ripped in to a spiral shape applied over orange paper (A5 size)

Cut and ripped again and placed over different shade of blue to create depth
(A5 size) - I particularly liked this design and decided to use negative rippings to create larger design

Used positive and negative shapes - torn edges to reflect crumbling, decay, damage, strong and weak - I'm very pleased with the overall effect of different textures, depth and use of complimentary colours

Sphagnum moss

Twite - peat conservation provides a unique habitat for rare and special wildlife and is important to prevent the extinction of this bird

Tissue - markal over canvass - brusho sponged on - picked up some browny/orangy colour which looks good - old and decayed

Undersheet of tissue - rubbed markal over sequin waste - shows good and bare crumbling areas

PVA applied from bottle - to reflect roots - brusho - cooper markal over vase - good textured
dirt effect with a lovely pattern from the roots

The above 2 papers are rough paper pulp - wettened with acrylic paint blobbed on and left to run markal over top - rubbed in with finger - created rough texture of peat landscape

Scrunched tissue applied with PVA - brusho - 2 colours of markal to create old roots effect

Strips of coloured scrunched tissue - applied with PVA - blue markal rubbed over in both directions - created loose firm textures and layers like protective paving and worn edges

Texture gel and byzantia paint - applied with knife - looks like rushing shimmery running water

Under sheet to tissue paper - when dry brushed over with brusho - printed on Twite bird images using byzantia - I love the randomness and beautiful textures in this paper

Crumbpled greaseproof strips - applied with PVA
to have good smooth areas and rough areas like the top of a peat bog - applied bleach with straw on smooth areas to reflect moss - painted a thin layer of byzantia over all of the paper which brought it together

Placed rectangles of making tape on paper to reflect paving stones - applied brusho - removed masking - randomly applied clear wax candle on some of the stones - applied brusho - looks like random areas of protective paving - some areas have deteriorated - other paths are clear

Undersheet from tissue - also brushed on left over paint - printed on image of sphagnum moss using byzantia

Brusho - bleached out images of Twite bird - applied byzantia with end of straw - rubbed on with finger - created a lovely network of mixed up roots and plantation without which the twite bird will disappear

Brusho - bleached out images of birds - blew paint with straw - washed over with gouache

Page 28 Sketch book - research on conservation theme

Over the last 3 months as well as undertaking research on the internet, I have climbed Kinder Scout and Black Hill to collect lots of photographic images as part of my research. Some of the images collected have been displayed on a notice board.

Below is a picture of an eroding peat bog. From this image I identified the following colours of petrol/steel blues and dark/washed out oranges. I am intending on using blues as the main colour with the dark orangy colours as complimentary colours.

I have created a sketchbook (currently 34 pages - 30 cm x 30 cm) which contains research material on the following:

• Details of the South Pennine Moorland Conservation scheme
• Pictures of the areas being restored
• Information on peat
• The causes of peat erosion - manmade and natural (images of peat erosion and crumbling bogs)
• The impact of peat erosion on plant, animals and the environment

• Images of wildlife and plants peat bogs support
• Words and phrases pertinent to theme
• How peat restoration is carried out

I have started to make drawings of the shapes, textures and patterns of the images in the sketchbook. These drawings will be used to develop a range of decorative papers for the larger colour compositions of abstract words.
